    FAQ

    Questions trekkers ask us most

    Still deciding?

Send us your dates and fitness level and we'll recommend a route honestly, even if it's a shorter one.

    Ask on WhatsApp
How hard is the Annapurna Base Camp trek?

It is a moderate, non-technical trek. Expect 5–7 hours of walking a day, thousands of stone steps around Chhomrong and Ulleri, and a high point of 4,130 m at Base Camp.

Regular hikers with good fitness can do it. We suggest 6–8 weeks of hill walking or stair training beforehand.

Should I do Annapurna Base Camp or the Annapurna Circuit?

Annapurna Base Camp takes 6–10 days, tops out at 4,130 m and takes you into the Annapurna Sanctuary, a ring of 7,000–8,000 m peaks. The Circuit takes 13–21 days, crosses Thorong La at 5,416 m and moves from subtropical valleys to high desert, but the altitude makes it harder.

Read our full comparison of ABC vs the Annapurna Circuit.

When is the best time to trek in the Annapurna region?

October–November and March–May are best. April brings rhododendrons in bloom around Ghorepani. June–August is monsoon season, with cloud, slippery trails and leeches, except in Upper Mustang, which lies in the rain shadow. In December–February the lower treks are pleasant, but Thorong La can close after heavy snow.

How much does the Annapurna Base Camp trek cost?

Our 9-day Annapurna Base Camp Trek starts from USD 799 per person, including all meals on the trek, a porter and two nights in Pokhara. The 10-day trip via Poon Hill starts from USD 499 with breakfast only. The Annapurna Circuit starts from USD 1,049.

Which permits do I need for the Annapurna region?

You need the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and a TIMS card. Upper Mustang and Nar Phu also need a restricted-area permit and must be trekked with a licensed guide. We arrange every permit; you just send a passport copy and photos.

Is the trail to Annapurna Base Camp affected by avalanches?

The section between Deurali and Machhapuchhre Base Camp crosses avalanche-prone slopes after heavy snowfall, mostly in late winter and early spring. Our guides check conditions with lodges each day, and will wait or turn back if the route isn't safe.

How do you deal with altitude sickness?

Itineraries climb gradually, and the Circuit includes a rest day in Manang before Thorong La. Your guide checks on the group every day, carries a medical kit including Diamox, and will descend early if anyone shows warning signs. If a rescue is needed, we arrange a helicopter, billed to your insurer.

Read our guide to altitude sickness.

What travel insurance do I need?

Your policy must cover trekking at your trip's altitude (up to 4,500 m for ABC, 6,000 m for the Circuit and Tilicho) including helicopter rescue and medical evacuation. Trip-cancellation cover is strongly recommended.

Where do we sleep and what do we eat?

In family-run teahouse lodges, usually in twin rooms, many in Gurung and Thakali villages. Higher up, rooms are simple and bathrooms are often shared. Menus cover Nepali dal bhat plus pasta, noodles, soups and eggs. Thakali dal bhat in the Kali Gandaki valley is famous.

Can I trek privately or on my own dates?

Yes. Any of our Annapurna trips can run as a private trek for one person or a whole group, on the day you choose. Tell us your dates and we'll send a tailored plan and quote.

    How do I pay?

A deposit of USD 200 per person secures your place. You can pay it by card through our secure online payment page. The balance is paid before departure or on arrival in Kathmandu.
